Bowen Therapy with Sophie

What is Bowen Therapy

Bowen therapy, as studied and practiced under Bowtech, is a dynamic and gentle remedial therapy system developed by Tom Bowen in Australia.

It focuses on subtle, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia (the soft connective tissue enveloping these structures) to stimulate the body’s self-healing mechanisms.

The sessions are performed on a massage table with the client well draped or lightly clothed to ensure comfort and privacy.

Sophie applies gentle pressure using fingers and thumbs, targeting specific sites with pauses between moves to allow the body to respond and rebalance, particularly influencing the autonomic nervous system to shift from stress mode to relaxation and repair.

This technique is safe for all ages and conditions, and emphasises holistic healing rather than just treating symptoms.

Sophie, as the therapist, uses Bowen therapy’s gentle but purposeful moves with clients well draped throughout the session to maintain dignity and comfort while effectively working on muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and nerve pathways enveloped by fascia.

This approach facilitates muscle relaxation, pain relief, improved mobility, and overall balance within the body’s systems, making it suitable for acute injuries, chronic conditions, and general wellness.

Bowen therapy is non-invasive, does not involve forceful manipulations or deep pressure, and often results in clients feeling deep relaxation and reduced muscle tension post-session.

Benefits of Bowen Therapy

Benefits of Bowen therapy include:

• Relief from muscular and joint pain

• Improved circulation and enhanced movement of tissues

• Activation of the body’s natural healing process

• Reduction in stress through autonomic nervous system balancing

• Suitable for pregnant women, elderly, children, and those with chronic health issues

• Gentle and safe with minimal physical strain on therapist and client

• Addresses underlying causes rather than just symptoms

Preparing for your Bowen Therapy treatment

Activity:

  • Avoid heavy activity on the day of your appointment.

Hydrate:

  • Remain well hydrated all day.

What to Wear:

  • Treatment is in your underwear well draped by soft large towels. Your private areas will always be covered and only the areas being worked on will be exposed each time. Under wear is required to be worn.
  • If you wish to leave your clothing on during the treatment, wear comfortable loose clothing.

Post treatment - For the rest of the day straight after the treatment

To allow for your body's electricity flow through your meridians please try to follow the following post healing guidelines.

  • On the day of your treatment, do not sit down for 30 minutes at a time. Stand up for at least 10 seconds.
  • If you had jaw work from me during your treatment, do not bite on hard foods and try not to yawn just for the day of your treatment, after your treatment.
  • Do not use really hot water in the shower or bath for 2 days after your treatment.
  • If sore use cold packs not hot packs.

Post Treatment - The next 6 days

  • Do not cross your legs while sitting as it could inhibit the circulation.
  • Avoid activities that jar or strain the body.
  • Sip on plenty of water everyday.
  • Walk more to assist the lymphatic system to pump out toxins and debris.
  • It is normal to feel sore or a little sick 2-3 days after your treatment as this is your healing taking place.
  • Do not seek any muscle manipulation treatment up to 7 days after your treatment as this will halt the healing process.

It takes 5-7 days to totally re balance the body after after your Bowen Therapy treatment.

Recommendation

Bowtech recommend initially to have 2 to 3 treatments 1 week apart for best results.
